An expulsion is an action to remove a child from his/her regular school of attendance and limit the type of school the child may attend due to behaviors explicitly listed in the California Education Code. An appeal to the County Board of Education must be filed within 30 calendar days following the decision of the governing board to expel. Once filed, an appeal hearing date will be scheduled within 20 schooldays unless the appellant requests an extension of the hearing date in writing. The County Board of Education is the local appellate body for most types of student expulsion appeals. Staff provides support to the Board and acts as a liaison between the school districts and parents on matters related to student expulsions. Expulsion hearings are held during regularly scheduled County Board meetings. For a list of scheduled Board meetings visit: https://go.boarddocs.com/ca/sccoe/Board.nsf/Public#

The information on this page will guide you through the appeal process and identify the persons to whom you may direct your questions.
